Is the Parker 75 the best of the Flighters?

Posted by Kevin Randle on

Kenneth Parker had something of an obsession with flying.  In 1949 he produced an all metal version of the Parker 51 which he called a 'Flighter', the metal tubular shape bore a passing resemblance to an aeroplane fuselage.

The name resonated with the pen buying public and all successive all steel bodied Parker pens were known as Flighters.  Strictly speaking, to be a Flighter, a pen must have been made by Parker, although it is not uncommon to see other makes referred to as such.

The Parker 50 Falcon Flighter was probably the most 'plane-like' of the pens, it has a distinct resemblance to a wingless Concorde:

I really like the 50 Flighter, but it is on the slim side and the spectacular integrated although unique, is not everyone's cup of tea.

The Parker 75 Flighter is less 'dramatic' but is probably more of a 'writers pen' and the sculpted 14Ct. Gold nib is wonderful, both in form and function.

The 75 ranks, in my opinion, up with the 51 as a candidate for the best Parker ever made and it comes in a variety of very attractive finishes.  In terms of practicality as an every day writer, however, the Flighter version is supreme.  It is constructed in tough stainless steel and is incredibly strong and 'ding resistant'.  where you might think twice about shoving your very pretty Laque Thuya 75 in a pocket or bag there are no such worries with the Flighter, it's virtually indestructible.

I confess to being a confirmed 75 enthusiast so may have some bias, but the answer to my original question is 'yes, the 75 is, indeed, the best Flighter'.  I suppose I should add 'arguably' somewhere but won't.
