Vintage Flex Nib Pens
Flexible, or 'flex nibs' are designed to allow the tines to bend upwards slightly as pressure is applied to give a broader line. Good flex nibs will snap back into the original configuration immediately the pressure is released.
The resultant variation in line thickness can produce beautiful results, in the right hands. Initially it may be necessary to move the nib more slowly across the paper but, with practice, when and how much pressure to apply becomes automatic and speed improves.
It is always possible, of course, not to deploy the flex actively and write normally with a light touch. Usually a little line variation 'just happens'.
Please don't hesitate to get in touch should you need any further information on a particular pen, the nibs often have their own, unique characteristics.
