Eagle Glass Cartridge Pen. 1890s.

Regular price £125.00

the Eagle Glass Cartridge pen, patented in 1890, was the first cartridge filling pen to be made commercially.  The patent would have expired in 1897 but it was about another twenty years before the filling system was resurrected, by Waterman.

The pen is constructed in brass with nickel plating, some of the brass is showing through the high points here and there but the surface is good and ding free.  The spiral design, occasionally seen on contemporary dip pens, also serves as a 'thread' to secure the cap when the pen is closed or posted.

The pen is all original, including the brass Eagle 'keyhole' nib. The feed is absent but I have resisted substituting a modern one to maintain the integrity of the pen.  The glass cartridge is present and free of any chips or cracks.

The barrel carries a clear imprint:

Eagle Pencil Co. New York

Pat. April 29.1890.

At around a hundred and thirty years old, the pen is a true antique and is in remarkable condition.  It is clearly a significant piece of fountain pen history and is extremely collectable, a rare and significant part of pen history.
