The Sheaffer Targa Medici pens, part of the Targa Luxury collection, came in only three patterns, all 23Ct. gold filled. This set, comprising a fountain pen and ballpoint, is the 'Medici Diamond'(683), the others were the 'Medici Line'(682) and the 'Medici Crosshatch'(684). All are full sized pens, not made as a 'slim' version.
The set is part of a small collection of recently acquired, unused Sheaffer Targas and is in perfect condition throughout. The set is presented in the original high quality case, the fountain pen has the original Sheaffer ink converter and the ballpoint has been fitted with a new refill.
Made around 1989, the set is constructed in engine turned brass with 23Ct. Gold filling and has a diamond pattern defined by deep grooves filled with black lacquer. The deep cut diamond surface reflects the light in an interesting manner, the individual facets catching the light at different angles giving subtly changing colours. It is a jewel of a pen that sat at the top of the Targa range at the time.
The nib, solid 14Ct. Gold, is the very striking 'inlaid diamond' design with a medium point. The slightly upturned tip was developed to increase the contact area between the nib and the paper to give an improved writing experience.
The Targa was produced with a bewildering number of finishes, the three Medici models were only made for a relatively short time and, as part of the 'Luxury Collection' are among the most sought after.
