Antique Silver Dip Pen. Hallmarked.

Regular price

Dip pens don't feature a great deal on this site but I come across something special now and then, such as this elegant Silver pen dating from around 1860.

The pen is in excellent condition, although there is a slight crack at the end of the stem, and carries a hallmark comsisting of a 'lion passant' followed by an anchor.  The anchor, very hard to make out, signifies a Birmingham assay office.  The lion. followed by an upright anchor, was not used after 1900 and the makers mark suggests the pen was made by George and Mary Wheeler who operated between 1855 and 1862.

At 19.6 cm., (7 3/4 ins) in length, it is an extremely long and elegant pen, attractive and very tactile.  The nib has two additional slits to give it more flexibility, although my dip pen skills do not allow me to demonstrate this adequately.  It would make a great 'signature pen' for someone with a decent hand.
