Made around 1947, this Burnam set is attractively finished in a marbled green pattern with grey panels, black veins, and Gold plated trim.
It has an excellent surface, the colours are bright and unfaded. The Gold plate has held up well in general although there is the odd mark, principally on the pencil. As is common with boxed Burnham sets of this period the pen and pencil were not imprinted.
The set has been fully serviced and tested. The lever filling system, fitted with a new ink sac, works well. The original S-20 nib is unusual in that it has a stub profile. The vertical lines are much broader than the horizontals, similar to an Italic, but the more rounded corners produce a more pleasant writing eaxperience. With practice, a stub nib can be very effective in calligraphy.
The pencil has a smooth rotaty action, the lead is extended and retracted by turning the cone. Spare leads are srored in the barrel and are accessed by removing the eraser. A new lead is fitted through the cone.
The box is new, it suits the set very well and will serve for transpotation and display.
