The Parker 'Burgundy and Black Duofold' is unusual in that it was one of the very few times that Parker used the colour of the pen as a model name, the 'Black tipped Jade' also springs to mind.
In 1931 the 'great depression' was seriously affecting all aspects of commerce and many pen manufacturers drastically cut production. Typically, George Parker was much more aggressive and launched a large advertising campaign, spearheaded by the 'Burgundy and Black'at a discounted price. Much of the production was devolved to Canada, as in this case, it was easier to export to the British Empire from Canada at the time.
The pen has been restored, tested, and is in first class working condition throughout. It has an excellent surface, crisp imprint, and bright gold filling to the clip and twin cap bands.
The imprint carries a clear date code '35', this refers to the third quarter of 1935 and is coincidentally the same as the year of manufacture. A '25' code would be the second quarter of 1935, not 1925.
A button filler, the pen fills well using just a single press of the button. The correct 14ct. gold Duofold nib has a small but very effective flex, giving good line width variation. In the right hands it would produce impressive results.
The Burgundy and Black is an extremely attractive and highly attractive pen. It was made, at a paricular time for a particular purpose: to strengthen the position of paker when the calamity of the great depression eased. Slaes were, however, moderate, and the pen is now hard to come by, especially in such fine condition.
