The Spot by Mentmore. Mottled Hard Rubber. c.1923.

Regular price

The Spot pen was first Mentmore lever filler released in 1923, this mottled hard rubber 'flat top' clipless was the first version of the Spot sub brand.

The pen has beeen restored, tested, and is in excellent working condition. It has a 'box lever' filling system, the lever is enclosed in a metal cage to provide a subsatantial anchor point and prevent swelling arount the lever slot.  The lever is a 'lollipop' design engraved with a stylised 'MMC' for Mentmore Manufacturing Company.  The design is vey similar to that patented in 1915 by Waterman in 1915 so the Mentmore company must have had an arrangement with Waterman, or perhaps just didn't care!

The ottled hard rubber, including the feed has an excellent surface with a legible 'Spot' imprint and 'leopard' mtif, unique to the Spot pen. There is a small chip alongside the inset 'Spot' on the cap and one on the lever cut out.  These could be filled satisfactorily but, as they are the only battle scars on a hundred year old pen I left them alone.

The filling system works well and takes up a good valume of ink.  At 15cm. in length when posted the pen has a high quality, well balanced feel.  The 14 Ct.Gold nib, also bearing the Spot name and leopard motif, writes with a smooth medium line and has a responsive flex. a person with a decent 'hand' would enjoy producing impressive results.

This is a very rare pen, the only one I have encountered.  Although, at around a hundred years old, it is clearly highly collectable it has a more robust feel than most antique pens and would serve as a regular writer.
