Mabie Todd Swan SM 205/60

Regular price £125.00

When the first Mabie Todd Swan SM 205/60 was introduced the advertisements highlighted a 'vulcanite flush fitting lever' as a major design feature.  This version appeared in 1939 and ceased production around 1940,  an early 'wartime' pen.

The body of the pen is often currently described as also being constructed of vulcanite (hard rubber) but it is, in fact, black chased celluloid. The hard rubber lever has taken a slight brown patina, it looks well against the engine turning on the celluloid.  The barrel imprint is crisp and clear.

The majority of SM200/60 pens have a nickel plated clip but this one, in very good condition, is gold filled.  It is possible that, at some stage, the wartime restrictions on usage of metals included nickel but not gold, or perhaps the 205/60 had the Gold filling as an upgrade.

This pen has been conservatively restored and tested and is in excellent working order. The chasing is sharp and clear, as are and the numerous imprints on the pen.  At the time Mabie Todd were very aware of the value of the Swan image and labelled every removable part, often more than once.

It is a decent sized pen, an impressive 16cm. length when posted.  It is well balanced and has a very high quality, solid feel.  The celluloid chasing feels good in the hand, it's quite a tactile item.

The 14Ct. Gold Swan number 2 nib delivers a medium line, perhaps a little on the fine side, but it has sufficient flex to add character to the writing.
