The Esterbrook 'J' double jewel series, introduced in 1948, was made in three sizes the 'J', the shorterr SJ, and the LJ, this pen. The LJ is rhe same length as the J pen but is slimmer.
The pen is finished in a vivid blue, much brighter than the more common 'Cobalt Blue, it is shown, in the photos, alongside a Cobalt Blue pen. Collectors of Esterbrook J pens often describe the individual pens as combinations of 'mackerel sky' or 'streaker' patterns. This pen is very unusual in that it is mostly mackerel sky with very distinct black lines, rather than streaks. The cobalt Blue pen is predominantly a 'streaker'.
The Esterbrook J series pens are unusual in that the collectability of a particular pen can depend upon its unique, individual patterning. This pattern is not as a result of any intent by the manufacturer but rather a consequence of the manufacturing process. Similarly, the variations in a particular colour are pobably due to the colour mix of the material available at the time, some less common than others. The uniformity and positioning of the stripes on this pen is remarkable, however, if it was a 'happy accident'!
A new ink sac has been fitted, as the old one had hardened with age, and the pen has been serviced and tested. The nib is horizontally engraved 'Esterbrook 9556'. Esterbrook listed the 9556 nib as 'fine writing', I found it to be very smooth writer producing a firm, extra fine line.
The 9000 nibs are 'Master Point' quality, they are all iridium tipped and were significantly more expensive than the 1000 or 2000 nibs,
At 13 cm. capped and an impressive 15.5 cm. with the cap posted, this is a long and very well balanced pen with a satisfying solid feel. The stainless steel trim, thick celluloid, and good build quality make the Esterbrook LJ very practical and durable pen.
