Esterbrook SJ in Silver Grey.

Regular price

Made between 1948 and 1952, the Esterbrook SJ is the slightly shorter version of the J series pens.  At 14.5 cm. when posted, however, it is still a good sized pen.

Shortly after release the company added an 'R', for 'registered' to the Esterbrook imprint, this example does not have the 'R' so it can be dated to 1948.

The pen is finished in a most attractive mottled pearlised grey colour, with stainless steel trim and twin black end jewels. It has a good surface, a deep shine, and a clear barrel imprint.

In great condition, a new ink sac has been fitted, as the old one had hardened with age, and the pen has been serviced and tested.  The barrel is imprinted with the nib code '9668', a medium nib for general writing, but the pen is fitted with a '9555' nib, a firm fine point designed for Gregg shorthand.

Gregg shorthand was a rapid writing system that used cursive shapes to represent sounds.  It used constant line thickness so a fine, firm nib was preferable whereas Pitmans shorthand used lines of varying thickness, requiring a flexible nib.

Esterbrook offered over sixty nib options, most were the standard 'Dura' all steel nibs but the ones with a 9xxx code, such as on this pen, had an Iridium tip and were designated 'Master'.  The pen writes very well, producing a smooth and consistent, fine line with the lightest of touches.  It is a very 'easy' writer.

The stainless steel trim, thick celluloid, and Excellent build quality make the Esterbrook SJ very practical and durable vintage pen, it would be a very good daily writer.
