The Swan 3140 was introduced as part of a new range of pens in 1949. The pens, characterised by new colours, locking levers and a screw in nib section, were discontinued in 1950.
The Swan numbering system used at the time is not difficult to decode. The first digit refers to the filling system, (3=lever), the second digit is the nib size, (1), and the last two digits are a colour code (40=bottle green).
In excellent condition throughout, the pen has a first class surface with sharp, clear imprints, the gold filling to the clip, lever, and cap band is similarly pristine.
The pen has been fully disassembled, thoroughly checked and cleaned and a new ink sac fitted. The locking lever filling system works well, it is designed to prevent the lever from catching on a shirt pocket with disastrous results. The 14 Ct Gold nib has a good flex, ranging from fine to extra broad with a little pressure. Someone with a decent 'hand' would be able to produce very impressive results.
The Swan is clearly in collectable condition but would also make a very good vintage daily writer or 'signature pen'.
