The Watermans 502 was introduced as the pen companies resumed full production after the restrictions imposed during WW2.
This example, in classic black with gold filled trim, is in superb condition throughout. It has an unmarked showroom finish with a very strong barrel imprint and pristine gold filling.
The original Waterman's ink sac was still present showing that this was the first restoration and the pen had not been used for decades. It had hardened with age and was replaced.
The correct 14 Ct. Gold Waterman's No. 2A nib is straight and well aligned. It produces a very fine, firm line which would suit someone with small handwriting or for more detailed work.
At a time when a reliable fountain pen was a necessity rather than an accessory, Waterman produced a range of nibs to do specific jobs, this one would have been designed for accountancy, for use with carbon paper, and perhaps Greggs shorthand. The near mint condition of this pen, however, suggests that it was a 'personal' pen rather than one bought the workplace, it has clearly seen very little use.
At an impressive 15.8 cm. in length when posted for use, and it was designed to be posted, it is a very long, well balanced and elegant pen with a solid, high quality feel. The pen is clearly in collectable condition but would also make an excellent vintage daily writer.
